Dear friends,
I just wanted to say a quick congratulations to Colton Easter who, along with many others, answered all of the "Spider-Man 2" trivia questions correctly. I threw Colton's name into a hat, along with everyone else who had the accurate responses, and drew his name out at random. I then asked Sam and Tobey to sign and personalize one of the Black Spidey posters and sent it off to Colton. Once again, congrats Colton and thanks to everyone who took the time to answer the questions and send them in. For those of you who are curious, below are the questions along with the correct answers.
Also, I wanted to take a moment and explain why I have been incommunicado as of late. I'm pleased to announce for the first time that I am writing the making of "Spider-Man 3" book. A sizeable portion of it was due earlier this month and I have been feverishly writing, pulling photographs, etc. and have hence been a little lax in my interactions with you guys. My apologies, but thanks for your understanding.
The book, which will be published by the good people at Chronicle Books and available in bookstores prior to May 4, 2007, is a comprehensive account of all that we went through to bring "Spider-Man 3" to the silver screen. It will contain chapters on the script, casting, production design, costume design and visual effects and will include a day-by-day journal I wrote while filming. Additionally, it will feature my behind the scenes photographs, which I began taking the very first day we started working on the film, on-set photography, pictures taken from various crew members and conceptual art that will blow you away. I am very excited to be writing this book, and am pleased that the reader will have a front row seat for the making of this movie, just as I have.
On the movie front, Sam and Bob are editing on a daily basis and we continue to meet with visual effects supervisor Scott Stokdyk and his team from Sony Pictures Imageworks to go over the latest visual effects shots. Additionally, a couple weeks ago Scott was quite busy overseeing a miniature shoot we did with Ian Hunter and David Sanger of New Deal Studios. Ian, David and their talented team built a portion of a skyscraper at 1/16 scale and then proceeded to rip portions of it apart per the action taking place in Sam's storyboards and animatic.
As amazing as our CGI buildings are, Scott wanted to build a miniature for two main reasons. For starters, by utilizing a miniature, you have the luxury of the resulting debris reacting in the "real world," just as it would if this really happened. There is no guess work or interpretation as to how beams would fall and floors would break away. Additionally, any time there is a practical way to film a shot, just as long as it looks as good as its CGI counterpart, Scott is in favor of the real world option. The work that Imageworks is doing on "Spider-Man 3" is groundbreaking. Literally, the computer programs required to make our characters perform as they need to for the movie did not exist when we started working on "Spider-Man 3." Imageworks has written a whole new set of computer programs for this picture and the results are mind blowing. Therefore, needless to say, if there is ever an opportunity to shoot something practically and take it off the CGI plate, Scott goes for it so that he and his team can focus on those shots which can only be executed via the computer.
Hope you are doing well and for those of you who have been asking for the answers to the questions here you go.

Thank you very much Mr. Curtis for keeping us fans up to date on the Spider-Man 3 production status. It's very clear that we are all extremely excited about this event and cannot wait for it to hit theatres on 5th May, 2007.
I would also like to thank the amazing Mr. Sam Raimi and the entire production crew and cast for the wondrous experiences they have given fans with the Spider-Man movies.
Looking forward to your continuous updates, especially with regards to the next available trailer.

Thanks so much for the update, Grant! Great to hear about the book; I have the "making of" books from the first two films, and am now eagerly awaiting the third, especially after this promise of personal behind-the-scenes photos and stories from YOU. (Though I am curious, what happened to Mark Cotta Vaz? He did a good job on the first two...)
Also, it's wonderful to hear about the practical effects work; it's always nice to know when the people behind such stuff are using the best of both worlds (practical AND digital) to bring these beloved special-effects extravaganzas to life in the best way possible. Thanks again, Sam, Grant, and EVERYONE on the Spider-Man films team!
Have a great day, and, again, if you get a chance, check out my funny cartoon drawings (including some Spidey stuff) at www.xanga.com/agentq7.
'Later,

Mr. Curtis, thanks a million for taking the time to talk to us fans. The spider-man movie's a pure dynamite! Without question the best superhero franchise ever!
I was wondering, and I apologize if this is not the right place to ask this. But we are MANY people awaiting the new trailer due Nov. 17'th. I was just wondering if you are allowed to say if this next trailer is teaser trailer 2, or THE theatrical trailer? There's been an obseen amount of talk about this, and we're going crazy over it. Can you say how long this trailer is, as you've seen a rough cut of it?
Regards Christian.

Its been nice to see that you can take the time to write to us unlike other film makers. Thanks once more and have a nice day!!!

Grant, I can honestly say that this is the best blog you've written yet. I'm thrilled to hear about the book, but does this mean that the film won't have behind the scenes footage as the second one did? Perhaps its too early to say. I hope there are more competitions to come, thanks for the update.

Please Please Please DO NOT OVERDUE THE PROMOTION OF THIS MOVIE! Too much promotion ruins even the best of movies. For example, as much as I love Pixar, they OVERPROMOTED the Cars movie. Too many commercials and blogs and teaser trailers and snippets and toys...ALL BEFORE THE MOVIE CAME OUT!
I LOVE THE Spiderman Franchise as he has always been my favorite marvel superhero. Please don't give in to impatient fans and money hungry execs.

You are awesome Grant Curtis. I have a question. It's been reported that Sam and Avi Arad will cameo in Spider-Man 3 as a director and producer who are making a Spider-Man movie, and Bruce Campbell will be the FX Guy (Quentin Beck). The whole thing sounds really insane to me. Can you tell us if it's true?
#21 | Posted by: Stephanie | October 26, 2006 1:26 PM
Will you make more spiderman movies?
#22 | Posted by: bryan belmont | October 26, 2006 3:03 PM
I heard the same thing about the cameos, and that the new trailer will released with Casino Royal. I can only hope that this is true.

Mr. Curtis,
I am looking forward to "Spider-man 3" probably more than any movie ever. Seriously. I was at Comic-con this year and had my mind completely blown. HAVING SAID THAT: I'm concerned with a "news report" from last week. Please tell us there's NO TRUTH to the "Movie within a movie" scene in SP3. Please! That scene sounds completely lame and really on-the-nose. Please say it aint so!
Thanks.
#29 | Posted by: sack66 | October 30, 2006 10:54 AM
jaja. the 4th villain is really a MYSTERY........but spiderman will be able to fight against 3 villains??mmm he is spiderman not superman ja!!i love spiderman, and all set of the movie, well bye and i love everybody!!!!!!
#30 | Posted by: agustin | October 30, 2006 4:11 PM
I read that in one of Spider-Man's comics Venom was so much of a menace to Spidey that for a moment he abandoned his costume & went into hiding in shear fear & paranoia! Will this be exploited in the movie? & also I like the sounds that Venom made in the animated series, ya know, with his tongue wagging & salivating saying,''We are Venom!'' It would be cool for him to be similar to that on the big screen!
#31 | Posted by: Gerald | October 30, 2006 11:56 PM
Hi, just like to say that I'm very thankful for you taking your time to chat to us fans. I've had a quick glance at the comments and I couldn't see it so I thought Ill ask. I've seen the first two Spiderman movies, they're awesome and I loved them. My fave Villainous character has always been Doctor Otto Octavius. The third installment looks very good. I wanted to point out that Ron Howard's daughter plays as Gwen Stacey, who happens to be Mr. Parker's very first girlfriend in the comics before Mary Jane Watson, why is she being shown now, instead of earlier on in Spiderman 1 or 2? I also know what happened to Gwen in the comics; I will not reveal anything because no one, including myself has seen Spiderman 3 & it may show what happened to Gwen. Nonetheless, I'll be seeing Spiderman 3 because I love comic's & the Spiderman franchise :)

Ok I have another question. MTV is advertizing that they are showing a Spider-Man 3 trailer on November 9th, and now everyone thinks it's going to be the brand new trailer. I get the feeling that it's just going to be the teaser. Is there any chance that if your next update appears before Nov. 9, you could tell us if MTV is showing a new trailer ot just the teaser?
#41 | Posted by: Stephanie | November 4, 2006 8:46 AM
I too can not wait until SP3 comes out. I am seen all Marvel comics that have been made into movies. So far Spiderman has been my fav. I think it is Awesome that Venom is in this one. Venom is my fav. Villan.

Hey, Grant, I was watching MTV and it said that they were going to be showing a Spider-Man 3 trailer on November 9th. My question is if you know whether or not that is just the teaser trailer that everyone's already seen or if it's the new one that's supposed to come out with Casino Royale? I would really appreciate it if you got back to me on this; a lot of people on imdb.com want to know. Thanks!
BTW, I love the blog! Keep it up!
